Leonard Cheshire Patio

During a visit to Leonard Cheshire Disability in Sileby during the Autumn of 2009 by members of Wreake Valley Rotary Club it was discovered that number one on the "wish list " of residents and staff was a communal outdoor space where they could all get together for social gatherings such as barbeques during good weather. The home had been raising funds for three years but were still well short of their £!0,000 target.

Members of our club, led by Rotarians Richard Payne and Graham Packwood, and Graham's wife Josey, resolved to help the "wish" come true. We successfully applied for a community grant of £4,000 from the Midlands Co-Operative Society to help fund removal of a large overgrown shrubbery at the front of the building and in its place construction of an attractive walled patio area and much needed additional car parking. A further grant of £750 was obtained from Rotary District 1070 (our District) and this paid for patio furniture.

The project was completed in April 2010, just in time for everyone to enjoy the Spring sunshine! There are seventeen residents, all of whom are in wheelchairs, at the home which has excellent indoor facilities but which, until now, lacked an outdoor space large enough for them to meet. The photographs below show the home before, during and after completion of the patio.
